Situated on the hill of a sandstone mound, the city of Jodhpur appears like a heaven in the huge desert. Jodhpur is one of the preferred tourist destinations in Rajasthan. Jodhpur city history reveals about the Rathore Clan. Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan, is attributed with the foundation of Jodhpur in India. He founded Jodhpur in 1459. The Jodhpur city is named after him only. It was formerly known as Marwar. Jodhpur tourist spots remains as a paradigm of the magnificence, traditions and customs of the Jodhpur. The splendid history of Jodhpur is embodied because of the different palaces, forts and other monuments of Jodhpur.

The Rathores were cast out of their original homeland, Kaunaj, by Afghans. They escaped to Pali, near to the present day Jodhpur. Rathore Siahaji wedded the sister of a native prince. This assisted the Rathores to set up and reinforce themselves in this region. In some time they drive out the Pratiharas of Mandore, just 9 km of today's Jodhpur. Initially, Mandore worked as their capital, but, by 1459, Rathores sensed necessity for a secure capital. This initiates the creation of Jodhpur, the Sun City, by Rao Jodha.

The Rathores were having nice relations with all the Mughals, except Aurangzeb. Maharaja Jaswant Singh even helped Shahjahan in his fight for progression. After Aurangzeb's death, Maharaja Ajit Singh threw out Mughals from Ajmer and added it to Marwar (now Jodhpur). Under the rule of Maharaja Umed Singh, Jodhpur raised into a excellent modern city. In the period of the British rule, the state of Jodhpur was the biggest in Rajputana, by land area. Jodhpur flourish under the British Raj. Jodhpur commercials , the Marwaris, prospered continuously. Jodhpur Marwaris came to occupy a leading position in business throughout India. When India became independent in 1947 the Jodhpur state merged into the union of India. Jodhpur became the second city of Rajasthan. The most important locations to spot in Jodhpur Rajasthan are: Mehrangarh Fort: The most glorious fort in Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort. It is situated on a 150m high hill. Rao Jodha, the then chief of Rathore clan, built it in 1459. There are many attractions within the fort like several palaces, galleries, a museum, temples and so on. Umaid Bhavan Palace: Another attractive palaces of Jodhpur is the Umaid Bhavan palace. Maharaja Umaid Singh build it in 20th century. A part of the palace has now been transformed into a hotel and a museum. Jaswant Thada: Jaswant Thada positioned towards the left side of the Mehrangarh fort complex. It is a royal monument made up of white marble. It was built to honor Maharaja Jaswant Singh.
